What Training Do I Need?

Getting Started as a Troop Leader

Two unrelated adult leaders (trained with current background check!) are required for every Girl Scout activity

Step 1 Sign Up! – Register as a member in MYGS and add the role of Leader/Advisor. You will be asked to complete a background check, and it may take up to 48 hours to be completed.

Step 2 Leader Training – In MYGS, click on GSLearn in the left hand menu and complete the “New Troop Leader Training (Foundation 1)” learning path, AB506 Training as well as the appropriate GSUSA Grade Level Essentials video(s).

Step 3 Meet Our GSCCC Staff – Contact the GSCCC Volunteer Support Manager for our Service Unit, Michelle Aliano, at maliano@girlscoutsccc.org. She will go through more detailed information for new leaders.

Step 4 Meet Our Service Unit – Contact your Service Unit Team at TOGirlscouts@gmail.com for more information about our service unit. Also explore this site for additional resources and attend our monthly service unit meetings (listed on our TOSU Calendar).

Once these steps are completed, you can begin recruiting girls to join your troop, hold a family meeting, and begin meeting and participating in activities within the limits listed on the Annual Permission Form (with a CPR/First Aider in attendance).  It is recommended to check out GSLearn for additional topic-specific trainings, such as Grade Level Essentials and training on GS higher awards.

Meeting with your Troop and BEYOND!

READ THE ANNUAL PERMISSION FORM! This form covers attendance at regular troop meetings and some local, short-duration events.  Trips and activities exceeding the form limits require additional permission from parents (and possibly approval from GSCCC), and often require additional training.

WHEN IS ADDITIONAL TRAINING REQUIRED?  Generally, trips and activities beyond what is covered in the Annual Permission form require additional training.  To determine what training is required, review the Safety Activity Checkpoints for your activity.

  • First Aid + CPR (Adult & Child, online only training is not acceptable): An adult certified in First Aid + CPR should be in attendance at all troop activities and events. It is recommended that troops have more than one First Aid + CPR trained adult, in the event one is ill and unable to attend a troop activity.
  • Stepping Out: This training is required for most trips and activities beyond attending regular troop meetings. It is available on GSLearn and must be retaken every three years.
  • Outdoor Training: This is a two-part training required for camping, campfires, and outdoor cooking. Part A may be in person or virtual; Part B is a full-day in-person class.  Prerequisite: Stepping Out

Camping, outdoor overnights, campfires, and outdoor cooking (including indoor fires) requires an Outdoor trained person present.

  • Backpacking Training: In person training required for any backpacking trips. Prerequisites: Stepping Out & Outdoor Training
  • Wilderness First Aid: In person training required for any trip where emergency services are more than 30 minutes away. Prerequisites: First Aid/CPR certification.
