What Training Do I Need?
Getting Started as a Troop Leader
Meeting with your Troop and BEYOND!
READ THE ANNUAL PERMISSION FORM! This form covers attendance at regular troop meetings and some local, short-duration events. Trips and activities exceeding the form limits require additional permission from parents (and possibly approval from GSCCC), and often require additional training.
WHEN IS ADDITIONAL TRAINING REQUIRED? Generally, trips and activities beyond what is covered in the Annual Permission form require additional training. To determine what training is required, review the Safety Activity Checkpoints for your activity.
- First Aid + CPR (Adult & Child, online only training is not acceptable): An adult certified in First Aid + CPR should be in attendance at all troop activities and events. It is recommended that troops have more than one First Aid + CPR trained adult, in the event one is ill and unable to attend a troop activity.
- Stepping Out: This training is required for most trips and activities beyond attending regular troop meetings. It is available on GSLearn and must be retaken every three years.
- Outdoor Training: This is a two-part training required for camping, campfires, and outdoor cooking. Part A may be in person or virtual; Part B is a full-day in-person class. Prerequisite: Stepping Out
Camping, outdoor overnights, campfires, and outdoor cooking (including indoor fires) requires an Outdoor trained person present.
- Backpacking Training: In person training required for any backpacking trips. Prerequisites: Stepping Out & Outdoor Training
- Wilderness First Aid: In person training required for any trip where emergency services are more than 30 minutes away. Prerequisites: First Aid/CPR certification.
